This 100% expression of Syrah hails from the Saint Joseph appellation in the Northern Rhone.
Created in 1956, the appellation is more expressive than the more famous and highly concentrated examples of Northern Rhone Syrah from Cote Rotie and Hermitage. St Joseph has approachability in youth along with the ability to age. So, if you are an impatient drinker and cannot wait decades for your Cote Rotie to mature, St Joseph might just be the wine for you.
The northern Rhone is characterised by it’s high proportion of granite soils. Ideal growing conditions for the heat-hungry Syrah vines. This is particularly important as the vast majority of vineyards in the area face East rather than the more favoured Southerly aspects. As a result, alcohol levels tend to be more modest.
Expect lots of aromatic red cherry and fruit compot aromas with a palate that is equally as fruity and balanced by earthy, smoky and meaty nuances. It is full bodied, deep and smooth with silky textured tannins. Perfect with roast lamb or grouse.
