Avignonesi Grifi IGT

Founded in 1974, Avignonesi is the leading winery in the Montepulciano area of Tuscany.

Its flagship wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, is appreciated by critics and wine-lovers worldwide and the winery is also renowned worldwide for the unique dessert wines Vin Santo di Montepulciano and Occhio di Pernice.

Grifi is a blend of two late ripening varieties, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Sangiovese comes from old vines in Montepulciano, which produce a concentrated, elegant wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon lends spice and power to the wine and is sourced every year from the best parcels that are both in Cortona and Montepulciano.

There is a separate fermentation for the two varieties in stainless steel tanks with the use of indigenous yeasts.

Alcoholic fermentation and maceration on the skins lasted up to 30 days, depending on the wine lots. The malolactic fermentation was completed in French barriques.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

The assembly of two such different personalities such as Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon blend together, giving this wine a unique character. Dark ruby red in colour with purple reflections, the nose opens with notes of blueberries, blackberries and incense going to sandalwood and graphite.

On the palate it is dense and complex with hints of blackberry jam and cinnamon. It then evolves like a balsamic explosion supported by good acidity. The lively tannin all over the palate accompanies the savoury and persistent finish.
