Chateau Palmer ‘Alter Ego’ Margaux

The philosophy of Alter Ego is Spontaneity. That sudden desire to indulge without delay, Chateau Palmer wished to gratify this. Thus, while remaining true to its philosophy, another expression of its terroir came to be. Since the 1998 vintage, a new approach to selection and blending has yielded this supple and rounded wine, distinguished by its freshness of fruit, crisp intensity and richness…from the moment out of barrel, it’s all that’s natural, bottled.

In most Chateaux throughout the Bordeaux region, Alter Ego would easily be considered a ‘Second Wine’, however, Palmer, from the outset, wholly produce Alter Ego as a separate entity which is on-par with the Grand Vin. The Alter Ego is made with grapes grown in different plots to those used for the Grand Vin and the final blend is contrary to the usual Palmer recipe of nearly 50/50 Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon.

Since 2014 all of the wines produced are made by employing 100% Organic and Biodyamic farming techniques. After 2 years of experimentation, Palmer decided to refrain from using any sulphites at all in their 2014 wines. That almost makes them a “Natural” wine producer!

Chateau Palmer’s Alter Ego combines power and complexity with delicacy, extreme elegance and a magnificent velvety texture. Approachable when young, the wines age remarkably well, developing even more complexity and aromatic richness, remaining still delicate and silky. Expect lots of fig, plum, blackberry and damson fruit laden with cocoa, liquorice and an earthy charm. A charming and delightful wine.
