Inspired by Cape Town’s radiant energy and creative demeanour, the Durbanville Hills’ premium offering – The Collector’s Reserve – is a unique range specially crafted by the winemakers using only the finest grapes from Cape Town’s best vineyards. To truly connect the Winelands and City, prominent landmarks in Cape Town have been specially selected and have been captured by vibrant Capetonian artist – Theo Vorster – to impart his vision of these landmarks onto each bottle. This range has been designed as a collector’s item for both wine and art lovers alike.
Durbanville Hills would not have existed without the enthusiasm of the winery’s producers and their faith in the high potential of their high-quality grapes. In the late 1990s seven grape farmers and Distell agreed to build a cellar as part of a joint venture to make their own wine. Since the first vintage in 1999, there are nine member farms, all located near the cellar. Such is the heritage of the region that the youngest of these farms, was established in 1714 and the oldest, a mere three years after those established in the Constantia area in 1685.
The cellar is an ultra-modern facility that can compare with the world’s best. The fermentation cellar, housing 247 stainless steel tanks of varying capacity and the spacious maturation cellar is cut into the hillside to soften the visual effect of the winery on the landscape. The smaller fermentation tanks allow batches from the different vineyards to be vinified separately.
This Pinotage utilises all the best modern techniques to extract maximum fruit, colour and tannin. It is then matured in a combination of new and second fill tight grained medium toasted French oak barrels for 14 months. Plums and prunes, sweet red fruit, cedar wood, hints of cinnamon and rich dark chocolate. Grippy tannins, sweet red plums and prunes with cherries lingering on the after taste.
