The Petit Verdot is the big brother of our other Natural Chilean wine, Globo Vultur’s Sauvignon Blanc. Made in much the same way, with use of minimal intervention, letting nature do it’s work unhindered. Comprising of 90% Petit Verdot with a small 10% of Carignan.
Petit Verdot is a variety which originates in Bordeaux and is still used to a lesser extent in the great wines of the Medoc. Mostly in Bordeaux it is used to boost colour, tannins and alcohol in the blend. Here, in the Colchagua Valley in Chile, with it’s cool sea influence, Petit Verdot can be used in greater quantities. This is because the variety is late ripening, so the cooling influence helps keep the acidity fresh in the grapes whilst the sugar ripens slowly and evenly, providing wonderful balance to the wine. A little Carignan is used via whole bunch natural Carbonic Maceration, whereby the fermentation happens within the berry negating the need to crush the berries which can release harsh tannins. The result of this type of maceration, is a soft, fruity and light style of wine. It is a process often found in young Rioja and Beaujolais.
This Petit Verdot is handmade in small batches, using soft punch down and gravitational movements. The majority of the wine undergoes 30 days of maceration with 100% aged in a second hand French oak barrels for 14 months. Carignan is also produced in small tank for a total period of 30 days. Both varietal wines are then blended together prior to being bottled unfiltered and unfined.
This is a textured wine with smooth tannins. The mouth-feel is full and has good weight. The elegance of the Petit Verdot combines perfectly with the liveliness and freshness of the Carignan – achieving a sensation of great balance and poise. The nose of this wine is slightly spicy, offering notes of raspberries which is a signature trait of Carignan.
