Pio Cesare Barolo

Barolo is the region that is responsible for Nebbiolo being called a “seductive” grape variety. When used in the context of wine this term can be read more or less literally as “expensive when it’s good”. This is an outstanding wine. Pio Cesare is an outstanding producer.

Pio Cesare uses grapes from their own vineyards as well as ones grown by longstanding contract growers. The winemaking is mostly traditional – although 30% small oak casks are used to mature the wine in addition to the traditional 2000-5000 litre oak barrels. The wine is aged for three years and released as an intensely aromatic wine that shows cherry, liquorice, tar, and rose characteristics.

We advise that patience will be rewarded over this wine. It is intense and shows some fruit but with careful cellaring, it will become a very fine example of one of the world’s finest wines.
