There is a mystery in the hills above Pinhão. This mystery concerns four terraces of vines on the Quinta do Noval estate. For reasons nobody understands vitis vinifera can take root safe from the phylloxera mite. Phylloxera is usually deterred by grafting vinifera fruiting “heads” onto roots of a different (resistant) vine species. Nacional is a wine that is made from a handful of vineyards in Europe that can grow ungrafted vinifera vines. These vines also happen to produce a consistently outstanding expression of Vintage Port. Deep ruby in colour, Quinta do Noval Vintage Nacional is a powerful wine displaying aromas of violet, liquorice and cherry with ripe, dried fruit and delicate tannins on the palate which linger to a long, intense finish.
