Saint Cosme Chateauneuf-du-Pape

Chateauneuf-du-Pape is usually a blend of up to 18 varieties, the Saint Cosme 2006 is, unusually 100% Grenache.

Saint Cosme was established in 1490 on the outskirts of Gigondas, north-east of Chateauneuf-du-Pape. The winery is named after the little chapel that sits at the edge of the vineyard, thought to protect the vines from the hill in Gigondas over to the vineyards down below in Chateauneuf. As a result, the current custodians of the vineyards repay this blessing by farming organically. It really shows in the wines. This is a rare example of mature 100% Grenache from the Rhone Valley, quietly complex and with a refined stealthy power.

Expect lots of truffle flavours backed up by smoked ham, cigar box and brandy soaked cherries. Superb structure and concentration, this wine still has a lively freshness considering it’s well over a decade old, it will continue to develop in bottle for easily another 3 decades or so. Or, if you cannot wait, drink now as it is moreishly delicious!
