Springbank was established in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell’s illicit still. The distillery is now in the hands of Mitchell’s great, great grandson – the fifth generation of the Mitchell family to own and manage Springbank. Being based in Campbeltown, the once proclaimed ‘whisky capital of the world’, many of the methods established then, by past generations, are still applied in the distillery today.
The 12-year-old edition, always bottled at cask strength, is a wonderfully balanced dram that boasts a smooth buttery body and rich fruity palate. Add a drop of water to release milk chocolate and vanilla notes.
Tasting notes:
Nose: Reminiscent of forest pine and chestnut trees, before returning home to the iodine of a Campbeltown malt and ending with a delicate hint of peat
Palate: A viscous palate balanced between citrus marmalade and toasted marshmallows, not forgetting flavours of vanilla and pepper
Finish: A deliciously thick, yet smooth liquid with a salty edge
