Rod McDonald ‘Trademark’ Syrah

Only made in a stellar vintage, Trademark is long-lived but limited.  Think Northern Rhone. Admirable ripeness and depth of flavour.

This is a wine made from two unique terroirs within Hawke’s Bay. Firstly, Saeger’s Block is a new and unique site overlooking the Tukituki River on the eastern bank opposite Havelock North. A very complex mix of limestone, clay, alluvial deposits, volcanic ash and windblown loess, this two hectare sun-trap has turned out to be a spectacular site for Syrah. Secondly, on the limestone slopes of Roy’s Hill, overlooking the Gimblett Gravels, lucky enough to benefit from some of Hawkes Bay’s most interesting Syrah. Steep and challenging, the vines really have to hang on until the end of the season to produce something really rather special.

This is an extremely special Syrah.

Rich ripe fruit from these two Trademark Syrah vineyards shows admirable ripeness and depth of flavour, retaining vibrancy and great complexity on the nose and palate with typical violet, spice, black cherry and subtle white pepper notes. Supple chalky tannins provide a structure that promises that all time in the bottle will be rewarded.
