Torres ‘Purgatori’ Costers del Segre

As far back as 1780, the monks of the Montserrat abbey carried out their penance at the Desterrats estate. The area was known for its extreme climate and harsh conditions. Their task: working the land to provide food for the diocese. Their legacy: discovering a new terroir and a superlative wine. The legend: Enormous barrels vanishing mysteriously. Some said it was the angels taking them to heaven…and so, the Costers del Segre became known as Purgatori.

Its inland location far from the sea has for centuries sidelined this area from world markets, producing wines with its own characteristic elements. Innovations in grape varieties and production methods have recently been introduced. It was the first place in Catalonia where the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay were introduced, alongside its native varieties, and also “Californian” winemaking techniques were adopted.

Dark cherry red with impressively intense fruit pigment. Delicious ripe
forest fruit aroma (blueberries) with fine smoky (roasted coffee) and
dried fruit (dried plums) notes. Exquisitely elegant with very fine
fragrant tannins. Persistent, intense and potent, yet subtle too.
