This Prosecco is a Millesimato which means that all of the grapes in the bottle have been harvested in a single year, making this a Vintage Prosecco. The vast majority of Prosecco on the market is always blended between lots of different years producing a very light style of sparkling wine. This Vintage, from Villa Marcello however, is as close as it gets to traditional method sparkling wines such as Champagne, Cremant and Cava.
The method of production employed for the Villa Marcello is one step beyond the regular ‘tank’ method used by most commercial producers. The Charmat Method, or Transfer Method as it is sometimes known, allows the wine a greater period of time in contact with its lees. Thus, producing a richer and more complex style of this Italian classic. The blend of 85% Glera and 15% Pinot Bianco has spent four months on lees after the initial fermentation with the secondary ferment taking aprroximately 60 days. Bundles of complexity.
Again, Villa Marcello, shun the norm of Prosecco and have produced a very dry style with lots of savoury expressions. Creamy and toasty hints sit happily amongst vibrant green apple, peach, greengage and citrus. There is an underlying sense of some darker fruit such as plum and cherry adding to the complexity of this great Millesimato Prosecco. Well worth trading-up to this sparkler, it really rewards!
