Dom. Clos Frantin Vosne-Romanee 1er Cru ‘Malconsorts’

Some people say that the wines of Vosne-Romanee are the perfect balance of the leanness and elegance of the wines at the northern end of the Cotes de Nuits (Marsannay, say) and the plumper wines from the likes of Pommard and Volnay.

Albert Bichot’s vineyard is located 400 metres from La Tache and fewer than 600 metres from Richebourg. The grapes are hand-picked, carefully sorted, and gently pressed as quickly after picking as possible. The fermenting must is kept cool at the beginning of the fermentation to control the speed of fermentation and to extract fresh cherry, strawberry, and currant fruit flavours from the Pinot Noir. Towards the end of fermentation, the temperature is raised to aid the extraction of colour and tannin from the grapes and give some body to the wine and so provide it with a structural balance on the palate.

This wine is aged in 50% new oak for over a year to impart some smoky and toasted characteristics without overwhelming the fruit. Without wanting to gush, this is a pure thoroughbred example of a fine bottle of red burgundy. Definitely outstanding and likely to undergo considerable development over more than a couple of decades.
