Walt Riesling Pfalz

Walter S. Siegel established himself as a vineyard owner in 1897. It wasn’t until 1937 that the Siegel wines were known in the UK, when his son Hans formed an unusual alliance with English cricketer Ian Peebles. This Deutsche-Anglo relationship imported Siegel’s wines, among other German wines into the UK. Hans honoured his father by naming this wine after him. And, so, the Walt Riesling was born.

This Riesling is from the Pfalz area of Southern Germany where the climate is a considerable factor in the wine’s quality and style. Here, it is one of the driest and warmest regions in Germany with long growing seasons and many sunshine hours. This helps achieve full ripeness, especially helpful as Riesling buds later than most other white wine varieties.

Pfalz is also home to the traditional wine Liebfraumilch. Roughly translated it means ‘dear-missus-milk’ or ‘virgin Mary’s milk’ as the wine was originally made by nuns.

With retro 1980’s wine aside, this Riesling is much riper and juicier than it’s predecessor Liebfraumilch. The wine has a firm medium body, taught nervy acidity with lots of juicy ripe stone fruit flavours of peach and apricot with some pear, apple and tropical fruits. It has a wonderful backbone of minerality and freshness which balances the slight touch of sweetness. It is enough to be considered to be classed as off-dry. However, this residual sugar gives the wine it’s great body and texture. With it’s funky label, modern style and ripe profile it can easily get you wanting more. I know for sure, we never say no to more Riesling!
