Good things come in small packages and it doesn’t come much smaller than this 187ml Auslese. Auslese means ‘selected late harvest’ and is only made in small quantities, hence the tiny bottle. On the scale of ripeness from dry to sweet, the Auslese is towards the top end of ripeness. The grapes themselves have been left to hang longer on the vine and some have been allowed to develop the famous Noble Rot, Botrytis. This shrivels the berry, coats it in a benevolent fungus which protects the grape, and concentrates the sugars by dehydrating the fruit. This results in a highly concentrated wine almost like nectar.
In addition to the Noble Rot, the vines in the Wehlener Sonnenuhr single vineyard are on average 70 years old. Old vines producing smaller quantities of very high quality grapes only furthers the concentration of the finished wine. This Riesling shows real depth of flavour with lusciously ripe apricot, peach, baked pineapple, tangerine and mandarin with added layers of cream, honey, sweet spices and nuts on top. Bright, vibrant acidity helps freshen the finish. A delightful wine. Perfect with creamy blue cheese or foie gras.
