Ribera del Duero might be described as Rioja’s trendier cousin. The signature grape in both regions is Tempranillo, and they both place a similar emphasis on oak ageing for extended periods of time. All the same Ribera has started releasing younger wines that are fuller, and more approachable upon release. This wine is made from grapes grown at 895 meters altitude on the single vineyard Pago del Cielo where Miguel Torres says the ‘vines touch the stars’. After stainless steel fermentation and partial malolactic conversion, the wine is aged for 12 months in a combination of French & American oak, of which 20% is new wood. The Celeste combines a pronounced intensity with satisfying acidity and a sensuous tannic structure. It sets the bar high as an introduction to the region. Expect lots of voluptuous black fruits, silky smooth body and spicy edges. Great with any hearty meat dish.
