Friulano is a white variety mostly found in the eastern area of Italy known as Friuli Grave DOC. Bordering Slovenia, where the Friulano grape is also grown with great success. It is thought that the variety is an old Bordeaux grape, once known as Sauvignonasse (completely unrelated to Sauvignon Blanc), and has declined hugely except for in this corner of Europe where it thrives to produce wines, not unlike the style of Chablis.
Established in 1965 the Tenute Tomasella winery is located near the village of Portobuffolè, in the lands of the noblewoman Gaia da Camino, the daughter of the “good Gherardo” mentioned in Dante’s Inferno. The wine is made from just 7 hectares of vines in the Friuli zone and is wholly fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness. The wine then sits on its fine lees for 2 months to add an extra dimension of complexity and texture.
Refined and subtle aromas reminiscent of honey and acacia blossom alongside fresh fruit such as pears and apples. Full-bodied and smooth with a well-balanced and refreshing acidity. Hints of almonds on the finish. Elegant with lots of finesse. Great value for money wine to enjoy with friends.
