Alsace is one of the most underrated and under-appreciated regions in the whole of France. Here in the UK, we seem to hold a flame for the fashionable Fleurie, magnificent mature Margaux or the ever popular pink from Provence. Yet, Alsace never really seems to get a look in. So, here’s to introducing the amazingly accessible Alsace!
Zind-Humbrecht are among the many great producers of Alsace leading the charge to place this neglected region well and truly back on the wine map. In 1959 the families Zind and Humbrecht merged. This brought the Humbrecht’s history of grape growing (since 1620) and Zind’s business acumen together. Emile Zind was the first grower to sell his wines directly to market rather than through merchants. The history aside, Zind-Humbrecht are at the fore-front of modern Alsatian winemaking, with all of their vineyards certified both Organic and Biodynamic since 2002. Consequently, all of the wines are guaranteed vegetarian and vegan too. Zind-Humbrecht are the perfect blend of tradition and modernity, characterizing them to be the “New Old-World” in terms of approach and style.
The Riesling grapes for this wine from Turckheim are carefully selected from 30+ year old vines from a plot in the Herrenweg Lieu Dit (Single Vineyard). Herrenweg is among a handful of sites currently under consideration for Grand Cru status and is widely respected as being of exceptional quality. The plot for this Riesling is mostly comprised of gravel with some clay and sand which often results in concentrated examples of this Noble grape.
The current winemaker, 13th generation, Pierre Emile, is well known for his extended fermentation and lees contact. This gives the wine a greater depth of flavour and texture. This Riesling shows intense fruits with lots of citrus aromatics whilst maintaining a lightness of body and alcohol. Contrary to populous thinking, it is a deliciously dry style too! It is elegant and very approachable, encapsulating the spirit of “accessible Alsace” beautifully.
