Produced only in exceptional years, this wine showcases remarkable depth, elegance, and complexity.
The 2015 growing season began with a mild, wet winter. An unusually sunny spring and a hot, dry summer followed it.
These conditions led to a September harvest of small, concentrated grapes with excellent acidity – the perfect foundation for a vintage Champagne.
La Grande Année 2015 is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay. Bollinger sources the Pinot Noir primarily from its vineyards in Verzenay (26%), Aÿ (20%), and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ, while obtaining the Chardonnay from the Grand Cru villages of Chouilly and Avize.
Bollinger adheres to traditional methods, fermenting this vintage exclusively in old oak barrels. This process enhances the wine’s complexity and ageing potential. After fermentation, the wine spends more than twice the required time ageing on its lees, sealed with natural cork, before being riddled and disgorged by hand.
Aroma:
The bouquet is rich and inviting, with aromas of stone fruits like apple, plum, and Mirabelle plum, balanced by hints of honey. As it develops in the glass, notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, cherry, and raspberry emerge, alongside subtle almond and exotic mango. Tertiary hints of vanilla and delicate woodiness complete the aromatic profile.
Palate:
On the palate, the wine is generous and indulgent, with flavours reminiscent of Mirabelle plum jam. Layers of roasted orange, Comice pear, and plum are complemented by a savoury maturity. The finish is long and balanced, with a touch of chocolate, citrus zest, and a mineral elegance.
