Bulleit Bourbon stands out for its high rye content and bold, spicy character. Crafted in Kentucky, it draws inspiration from Augustus Bulleit’s original 1830s recipe. The mash bill contains 68% corn, 28% rye and 4% malted barley, creating a whiskey with real depth.
It is aged for a minimum of six years in new American oak barrels. The barrels are charred to level four, known as the “alligator char.” This enhances flavour extraction, giving Bulleit its rich colour and layered taste.
The high rye content gives Bulleit its signature spice and dryness. This is immediately apparent on the nose. Expect warm aromas of nutmeg, oak and dried orange peel. Vanilla and a faint leather note follow, adding complexity without overwhelming the senses.
On the palate, Bulleit is bold and full-bodied. The rye spice comes through first, followed by toffee, clove and a hint of cherry. Oak and vanilla round it out, offering a smooth yet dry balance. There’s a touch of smoke, subtle but lingering. The mouthfeel remains clean and vibrant, thanks to its 45% ABV.
The finish is long, dry and satisfyingly warm. Spice returns in the aftertaste, along with gentle caramel and charred oak. Bulleit’s finish remains crisp, making it a great sipping bourbon. It also stands up beautifully in classic cocktails such as the Old Fashioned or Manhattan.
