Kilkerran Single Malt is the product of Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery, re-opened in 2004, after closing in 1925. It’s the sister distillery of Springbank, and Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 10 is its newest release.

Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 10 is matured in 90% bourbon and 10% sherry casks. These casks combine with Kilkerran’s sweet peat style to make for a delectable dram. A typical Campbeltown whisky, there is also a clear maritime influence.

A departure from the typically lightly peated single malt, Heavily Peated Kilkerran is released twice per year at cask strength and around 45PPM. Distillers then bottled this instalment in 2024 at 57.8% ABV and there is no added colour and no chill filtering.

Tasting Notes

The aroma greets you with a powerful peat presence, bringing the distinctive scent of burnt embers and smoked wood. Behind this smokiness, there’s a subtle sweetness from the sherry casks, with dark fruits such as raisins and sultanas. The bourbon casks impart a hint of vanilla and creamy toffee, which balances out the peat. A faint salty, maritime breeze enhances the overall nose, giving it an intriguing depth.

The taste follows through with a rich, smoky profile. The peat is full and potent but not overpowering. It combines seamlessly with flavours of dried fruits, particularly figs and plums, alongside a touch of dark chocolate. There’s a gentle sweetness, reminiscent of toffee, that works in harmony with the peat, balancing the intensity of the smoke. The mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a slight oily texture that coats the tongue and carries the flavours well.

The finish is long and warming, with the smokiness lingering on the palate. As the peat fades, subtle flavours of leather, spices, and dried fruits emerge, leaving a satisfying complexity.
