Glengyle Distillery releases Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 8, the latest addition to its celebrated “Heavily Peated” series.
Known for combining robust peat smoke with the unique maritime character of Campbeltown, this whisky offers a complex and balanced dram.
Its cask strength and flavourful profile have earned it a reputation as an exceptional yet accessible single malt.
Kilkerran Single Malt is the product of Mitchell’s Glengyle Distillery, re-opened in 2004, after closing in 1925.
Kilkerran Heavily Peated Batch 8 is a marriage of 90% bourbon casks, and 10% Sherry casks, and has been bottled at a strength of 58.4%.
There is no added colour and no chill filtering.
The whisky has a pale straw to light gold hue, suggesting minimal to no artificial colouring and maturation in fresh casks. Its rich legs cling to the glass, hinting at its creamy texture and high alcohol content.
The aroma opens with bold waves of peat smoke, reminiscent of a seaside bonfire. Campbeltown’s signature brininess comes through, with notes of damp seaweed, salty air, and a subtle hint of engine oil. Sweet and fruity undertones balance the smoke, featuring vanilla custard, honey, and crisp green apples. Bright lemon zest and a delicate floral note add further depth.
The whisky delivers a powerful, mouth-coating experience, showcasing its cask strength. Intense peat smoke dominates the palate, evoking smoked meats, barbecue ash, and charred wood. Sweetness follows, with flavours of toffee, malted barley, and zesty citrus peel.
Classic Campbeltown minerality and salinity shine through, complemented by warming spices like black pepper and ginger. A subtle herbal quality rounds off the layered profile.
