Gunderloch ‘Als Wars ein Stuck von mir’ Riesling is a German white wine with fantastic balance, lovely mineral character and spice that will develop as it ages but drinking beautifully now.
This is an experimental wine produced by the Hasselbach family at Weingut Gunderloch. Als Wars ein Stuck von mir translates as “As though it were a piece of me” – it is part of a project to restore the family’s reputation as one of the finest producers of Rhine Riesling grown on Permian red slate soils.
Producers harvest this particular wine from a part of the vineyard that has been converted to biodynamics. The hand-harvested grapes also spend some time macerating on skins – which is unusual – and fine lees, with some of them being fermented in clay amphorae. The wine undergoes minimal clarification, ensuring no delicate flavours are lost.
The result is an aromatic and racy wine that expresses the varietal aromas and flavours of Riesling magnificently. Classy stuff produced ‘naturally’. This intensity continues on the palate with an long satisfying finish. Drinking beautifully now but will evolve and develop for many years to come.
