Holden Manz Big G 2020 is a bold and elegant red blend from South Africa’s Franschhoek Valley. This vintage combines classic Bordeaux varietals, offering both power and finesse in every sip. The 2020 blend consists predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, supported by Merlot and Malbec.
Grapes were hand-harvested from the estate’s organically farmed vineyards. Careful selection ensured only the best fruit made it into the cellar. Fermentation took place in small stainless steel tanks, allowing precise temperature control and gentle extraction. The wine then matured for 20 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which were new.
In the glass, the Big G 2020 shows a deep ruby colour with purple highlights. Aromas rise generously, dominated by blackcurrant, plum, and blackberry. Subtle notes of cedar, tobacco, and graphite add complexity and intrigue. A hint of violet gives the bouquet a delicate floral lift.
On the palate, this wine is full-bodied yet refined. Silky tannins carry layers of ripe dark fruit and cassis. Savoury spice, pencil shavings, and dark chocolate follow, revealing its time in oak. The texture is plush but never heavy, supported by fresh acidity that lifts the finish.
The balance between fruit, tannin, and acidity gives this wine great ageing potential. It will reward cellaring for up to 10 years. Decanting for an hour will help the wine open beautifully in its youth.
Holden Manz Big G 2020 pairs wonderfully with grilled red meats, lamb shank, or rich mushroom dishes. It also shines alongside hard cheeses like aged cheddar or Comté.
