Established in 1851, Janneau continues to shape Armagnac’s future by honouring its heritage while embracing innovation and precision. This XO distinguishes itself through both its refined character and its rare production technique.
Unlike most Armagnacs, Janneau XO Double Distillation undergoes a double distillation in traditional copper pot stills. More commonly associated with Cognac, this method produces a spirit that is smoother, rounder, and more aromatic. By distilling the spirit twice, Janneau eliminates impurities while preserving its essence. This process creates an elegant and polished expression that retains depth and authenticity.
The eaux-de-vie age for a minimum of 20 years in 400-litre oak barrels sourced from the forests of Gascony and Limousin. Janneau stores them in its original 1851 cellars, located in the town of Condom in the heart of the Armagnac Ténarèze. The large-grain oak provides ideal conditions for ageing. The cellar master begins the maturation in new oak, later transferring the spirit to older barrels to avoid over-extraction from the wood.
On the nose, Janneau XO Double Distillation reveals aromas of dried fruits, vanilla, and toasted oak. A touch of prune adds depth, while delicate floral notes lift the bouquet. The palate is rich and silky, delivering flavours of walnut, fig, cinnamon, and soft tobacco. Layers of honey, almond, and cocoa gradually emerge as the spirit evolves. The finish is long, smooth, and warming, with gentle spice and lingering notes of dark chocolate and dried fruit.
Janneau presents this expression in an elegant decanter-style bottle, enhancing the visual appeal of the experience. It is best savoured neat in a tulip glass to appreciate its full aromatic complexity.
