Jesús Madrazo Real de Asua comes from one of the founding families of Compania Vinicola del Norte Espana (CVNE). His father, José, co-founded Contino in 1973, establishing the first single estate in Rioja.

In 1995, Jesús, a fifth-generation member of CVNE’s founding family, joined as a winemaker in Haro. By 1999, he had become the Senior Winemaker at Contino Estate, where he gained global recognition and created Spain’s first-ever 100% Graciano wine.

In 2017, Jesús left Contino to seek new challenges and started his own business.

Winemaker’s Notes

I hand-selected the Viura from an exceptional plot of 40-year-old vines near the small town of Villar in the area of Viñaspr. This is a cool and high part of the Sierra de Cantabria in Rioja Alavesa.

The beautifully fragrant Malvasia comes from the Villota estate in Laserna (formerly part of the Contino estate).

On arrival at the winery, the grapes were transferred immediately to the pneumatic press and macerated with dry ice before a direct, gentle pressing.

Following the alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel, the final fermentations took place in various used barrels.  These were French oak (90%) and Acacia wood (10%) from
the previous vintage as well as a small % of new French oak.

The wine was then aged for 3 months on its fine lees with gentle, regular battonage, before racking. There followed a further 5 months ageing in the same barrels,
until stabilisation and bottling in August 2022.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

A polished straw yellow with a delicate green edge. On the nose, it is delicate and very floral (the highest percentage of Malvasia is noticeable compared to 2020) with citrus, mandarin peel and mineral character. Fat and wide palate, lots of length and freshness. It is a gastronomic wine to accompany meaty fish, poultry and other full-flavoured white meats like Secreto de Cerdo! I recommend that it should be opened half an hour before serving so that it has a chance to breathe and is also not too cold! It is still young and will reach its peak around 2026.
