Lamb’s Navy Rum is a premium-quality rum with a smooth, clean, distinctive taste. First produced in 1849 by Alfred Lamb, an enterprising 22-year-old wine and spirits entrepreneur, this delicious navy-strength rum shines in cocktails, mixed drinks or simply neat on the rocks.

The blend includes 18 superior rums from Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Guyana to create the Navy Dark Rum we now know and love.

The term “navy strength” refers to how much alcohol a spirit contains – typically a higher amount than usual. In the navy of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, ships relied on gunpowder for their defences, and if gunpowder got wet it became unusable, spelling disaster for the ship. Due to the length of their voyages, ships carried large amounts of provisions, including spirits, but if these spilled on gunpowder it could dampen it. Beyond a strength of 57% ABV, spirits are flammable, so even if it spilled, gunpowder would remain intact. A test for “navy strength” was to pour a spirit on gunpowder and check that it would still light, thus keeping the ship armed but the crew happy!

The hexagon shape of the bottle assured his smooth and refined rum wouldn’t roll around on ships.
