Longrow Peated is a distinctive Scotch produced at the Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland.

Known for its bold, smoky character, it stands out due to its heavily peated malt, offering a unique expression compared to its more traditional counterparts.

Origin and Distillery

Region: Campbeltown, one of Scotland’s five whisky regions. Although it once had over 30 distilleries, only a few remain today, including the well-regarded Springbank Distillery, which produces Longrow.

Distillery: Longrow whiskies are made at Springbank, which is famous for using traditional methods. This includes malting their own barley by hand and sticking to time-honoured production techniques. First distilled in 1973 to mimic the smoky style of Islay whiskies, Longrow quickly became favoured for its intense peat smoke and full-bodied flavour.

Peat Profile and Distillation

Peat Level: Longrow is among the most heavily peated whiskies produced on the Scottish mainland, with a phenol content of around 50-55 ppm (parts per million). This puts it on par with some of the more famous smoky whiskies from Islay.

Double Distilled: Unlike Springbank’s signature whisky, which is distilled 2.5 times, Longrow is distilled twice. This helps retain a heavier, oilier texture in the spirit, contributing to its rich mouthfeel and deep flavours.

Flavour Profile

Nose: On the nose, Longrow Peated greets you with powerful waves of smoky peat, like a smouldering campfire. There are also earthy, tarry notes with a hint of sea salt, alongside more delicate aromas like citrus zest, green apples, and vanilla. Depending on the batch, you may also detect dark chocolate, cured meats, or tobacco, adding to its complexity.

Palate: The palate is rich and full-bodied, with smoky peat taking the lead, balanced by a sweet, malty undertone. Expect flavours of charred oak, burnt caramel, and smoky wood, accompanied by a salty maritime influence. A sweetness emerges in the form of toffee, honey, or ripe fruit, helping to balance the bold smoke. This contrast creates an intriguing and satisfying experience.

Finish: The finish is long, warming, and slightly oily, leaving lingering notes of ashy smoke, black pepper, leather, and a slight herbal bitterness. A touch of sweetness from the cask maturation rounds off the finish, making it well-balanced and long-lasting.

Maturation and Cask Influence

Cask Type: Longrow Peated is typically aged in a mix of bourbon and sherry casks, though some special releases may be matured in wine, port, or rum casks for extra depth. The bourbon casks usually bring notes of vanilla, toffee, and coconut, while the sherry casks add dried fruits, spice, and nuttiness.

Age Statement: The core Longrow Peated expression often doesn’t carry an age statement, meaning it’s a blend of different-aged whiskies. However, some older editions (such as 10, 14, or 18 years) are available, offering even greater complexity.

Tasting Notes

The whisky has an oily, viscous texture that coats the palate beautifully.

This heavier mouthfeel, combined with its bold flavours, makes it stand out as a richly textured and intense whisky.

Character: Longrow Peated appeals to whisky lovers who enjoy a heavily peated style but want something different from the typical Islay expressions. Its combination of intense smoke, sweet malt, and maritime flavours, along with its bourbon and sherry cask influences, gives it a depth that makes it both rewarding and memorable.

Style: Often described as rugged yet balanced, powerful yet nuanced, with a strong coastal influence reflecting its Campbeltown roots.
