This spirit originates from what is now the Zadar region of Croatia.
Distillers obtain the spirit by distilling Marasca cherries, which give it its distinctive aroma and flavour.
Venice commercialised it in the 18th century. The straw covering on the bottle remains from the era when people packaged bottles this way for transportation.
Luxardo owns the largest cherry orchard in the European Union, where they grow the cherries used in their spirit.
