Matawhero Single Vineyard Gewürztraminer, Gisborne New Zealand.
The grapes were sourced from the Matawhero Vineyard in the Riverpoint appellation, which was the first vineyard in New Zealand to plant Gewürztraminer.
The clones used are Entav 47, and the silt loam over clay soils provide ideal growing conditions for this grape variety.
Vertical shoot-positioned vines were thinned and had their leaves plucked to ensure an open canopy and a balanced crop load. This practice ensured full ripeness and intense flavours.
In the early morning, machines pick the grapes and transport them to the winery without preservatives.
Since Gewürztraminer has small, slightly phenolic berries, the winemaker decides when to harvest.
Upon arrival, the team floats and ferments the juice using M2, an aromatic yeast. They typically stop fermentation at around 7 g/L of residual sugar. After that, they rack the wine, add sulphur, stabilise, filter, and bottle it
Colour – Pale straw with hints of gold.
Aroma – Exotic rose petal, clove, lychee and star anise notes. Palate – Clean fruit-driven style, rich and full with lychee, Turkish delight, spice and ginger.
