Monkey 47 Dry Gin has a devout cult following and is made – so the story goes – according to a recipe found in an old suitcase that belonged to a retired RAF Wing Commander who lived in the Black Forest.
After much experimentation with the original recipe, Alexander Stein and his team at the distillery released Monkey 47 in 2010, and since then it has continued to grow in popularity.
This gin is crafted with no less than 47 botanical ingredients, giving the gin its name. These include bramble leaves, acacia flowers and lingon berries. Added to these are a host of other aromatic offerings including six different types of pepper. The recipe unites British traditions with the spices of India and the rich landscape of the Black Forest.
After maceration and distillation, the gin spends 100 days in earthenware vessels to allow the botanicals to fully express their flavours.
Bottled at 47% ABV, this exceptional, well-balanced gin gives a heady scent of lime on the nose. Then, citrus, floral and herbal juniper follow on the palate. It has a crisp, racy finish.
Enjoy Monkey 47 Dry Gin over ice with tonic, or in a sling or martini cocktail. It adds a deliciously crisp and spicy twist to classics.
