Quinta do Noval is a single vineyard in the Douro that produces wines only from the grapes grown on the estate. As a result it has a claim to produce on of the only “terroir-driven” ports of any of the famous port shippers. The control they have over their vines, harvest, and wine-making means that they often (proudly) declare a vintage when many of the other famous producers do not. After the rave-reviews that greeted the 1997 and 2011 Vintage ports the 2013 remains somewhat “under the radar” and as a result is still available for purchase at a reasonable price for careful cellaring. It is a powerful wine with plum and blackcurrant fruit characteristics as well as burnt honey, crushed rose, and slate. It will reach something like maturity between 2021 and 2050.
