Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port 2016

Quinta do Vesuvio is one of the Douro’s great estates. It is situated far upriver in the Douro Superior. The Quinta’s reputation for producing outstanding wines dates to the nineteenth century when the Viscount of Villa Maior wrote, “All this wine is made scrupulously and to perfection… this Quinta was made for princes…”.

Since acquiring Quinta do Vesuvio in 1989, the Symington family has developed its legendary reputation further. The family preserved the age-old method of treading the grapes in the granite lagares that date from 1827. Teams of up to 40 men and women tread the grapes each night of harvest. Vesuvio is one of the last Douro properties to maintain this tradition and all the vineyard’s Ports are made this way.

Vesuvio’s old vineyards produced a small number of bunches per vine, rarely yielding more than 700g each. These tiny quantities are harvested from small, compact bunches which produce tremendously concentrated and well-structured wines. The Quinta do Vesuvio 2016 was made from a combination of the property’s choicest vineyards, carefully selected by Head Winemaker Charles Symington and his team.

The blend consists of 43% Touriga Nacional, 25% Touriga Franca, 12% Tinta Amarela, 17% Alicante Bouschet and 3% Sousao. Aromas of mediterranean herbs, lavendar and a resinous scent blend with fresh black fruits and anise. The palate has luxurious velvet-like smoothness, delicious kirsch and dark cherry flavours with hints of liquorice, menthol and chocolate. Powerful, structured and complex with an abundance of elegance, poise and finesse. This has many, many more decades to go. Be patient, it is going to be worth it!
