Rutherford Hill Merlot is an exceptional example of this rich Californian style of a classic French grape.
Rutherford Hill Winery commands a spectacular view overlooking the Rutherford bench of Napa Valley, founded in 1976. It is a Terlato Family winery whose ambition is to produce great wines. They believed that the climate and soil of the valley, similar to Pomerol, were well suited to Merlot and were among the first to pioneer what has eventually become Napa’s premier varietal.
For this Merlot, they adopted a centuries old winemaking technique. First used in the 18th century, the technique calls for the addition of Syrah to the blend.
Together with the Merlot, winemaker Marisa Taylor included Cabernet Sauvignon for structure, and Syrah for body, character and heft.
It is aged for 16 months in French oak casks.
Rutherford Hill Merlot is deep ruby in colour with intense aromas of dark cherry, plum, fresh fig with a hint of nutmeg. On the palate medium-bodied with concentrated flavours of dark plum, pomegranate, dried cherries and a mocha finish that then lead to supple and lengthy finish. Tannins are plush and rich. It is smooth, definitely a foodie wine!
Enjoy with roast beef, steak or rack of lamb.
