Bila-Haut Banyuls Rouge is a superb, fortified wine from the sun-drenched Roussillon region of southern France. Crafted by Domaine de Bila-Haut, owned by Rhône producer Michel Chapoutier, this wine showcases the rich heritage of Banyuls winemaking.
Made predominantly from Grenache Noir, it captures the essence of the Mediterranean climate. The grapes ripen under intense sunshine, developing deep concentration and complexity. Harvesting occurs by hand to ensure only the best fruit is selected.
The vinification process follows traditional mutage, stopping fermentation with grape spirit to retain natural sweetness. The wine then matures in oak barrels, allowing flavours to evolve. This ageing process imparts depth, complexity, and a harmonious balance between fruit and structure.
In the glass, Bila-Haut Banyuls Rouge displays a deep garnet-red hue with flashes of mahogany. The nose is intensely aromatic, offering notes of ripe black cherry, fig, and dried plum. Hints of cocoa, liquorice, and warm spice add further intrigue.
On the palate, it is rich, velvety, and beautifully structured. Layers of dark berries, mocha, and sweet spices unfold, complemented by a touch of balsamic freshness. Silky tannins and balanced acidity create a long, lingering finish with whispers of roasted coffee and dark chocolate.
