Folding Hill Orchard Block Pinot Noir is a smooth, complex estate Pinot Noir from a stunning inland region of New Zealand’s South Island.

The Folding Hill winery is run by its founders, the Kerruish family. They strive to make rich, subtle wines using vines first planted in 2003. Viticulture is by award-winning viticulturalist James Dicey and his Grape Vision crew. The experienced and very talented winemaker Fred Riends heads up winemaking.

This Pinot Noir grows in the Orchard Block, the most sheltered part of the Folding Hill vineyard. Its western boundary is an orchard of cider apple trees, and the fruit usually displays a dark, structured profile. After vinification in a small open top fermenter using wild yeasts, this wine was barrel matured for 20 months. The producers then bottled it unfiltered and unfined.

Enjoy this unique wine with a delicate meat dish like grilled lamb chops. It also shines with wild mushroom risotto.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

Bright ruby appearance, and a bouquet filled with scents of place then ripe red berry fruits and dark cherry. Soft notes of toasted cedar display the 11 months of barrel ageing. On the palate, a core of deep dark fruits balance hints of fresh late summer berries. The intimate touch of winemaking is evident in the light vanilla oak notes, subtle body and the unassuming but long finish. Drinking well now but will develop in the cellar for 10 plus years.
