Hanewald-Schwerdt Spätburgunder is a smooth and subtle German red wine with a savoury, mineral palate.

Founded in 1955, Weingut Hanewald-Schwerdt is a family owned and operated estate in Leistadt.

Today, cousins Thomas Hanewald and Stephan Schwerdt run the estate. They are members of ‘Generation Riesling’, a body made up of the best young winemaking talent in Germany.

The secret of their handcrafted wines is a unique limestone reef which dominates all the sites around Leistadt. The vines are old and surrounded by a protected natural resort in the shade of the Haardt mountains.

Spätburgunder is the German name for Pinot Noir – late (Spät) ripening Pinot (Burgunder). This, along with Riesling, is the estate’s signature grape.

This wine aged in a 6000 litre barrel, then with a small amount in French oak.

Hanewald-Schwerdt Spätburgunder should be drunk young and pairs beautifully with pigeon or duck.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

Bright strawberry and cherry notes lead the way with some delicious savoury character and good minerality. It also has touches of smokiness and spice due to the small amount of aging in new oak. You’ll find some earthy flavours with wild herbs too, but the juicy fruit, crunchy minerality and lively acidity keeps it vibrant and easy drinking.
