Gonzalez Byass Leonor Palo Cortado 12 Year Old is a beautifully rich and unusual sherry. It’s made at one of our favourite bodegas.
Palo Cortado is a style of sherry governed by some rather haphazard rules. There are no rules that dictate its standards of production. Samples are submitted to the regulatory body. If it smells and tastes like “palo” then it is labelled as such. This particular wine is made with 100% Palomino. It aged oxidatively, producing a style of wine which is a good half-way between a fresh, young Amontillado and a matured Oloroso.
Gonzalez Byass Leonor Palo Cortado 12 Year Old has all the complexity of an Oloroso such as walnuts, fudge and dried apricot fruit. It also boasts a fresh complexion of bitter orange, hazelnuts and sultanas of an Amontillado. This is a top quality expression of Palo Cortado.
