This spirit originates from what is now the Zadar region of Croatia. It is obtained from the distillation of Marasca cherries and the fruit is what lends the spirit its distinctive aroma and flavour. It was commercialised in Venice in the 18th century. The straw covering on the bottle is a vestige from the time when it was customary to package bottles this way for transportation. Luxardo owns the largest cherry orchard in the European Union and the fruit they grow there is what is used in their spirit.
