The Montelobos Ensamble Joven Mezcal uses Papalote as its base agave and is complemented by Espadín and Tobalá. This is a non-traditional agave blend for the spirit.
Produced in Santiago Matatlan, renowned as the “Mezcal Capital of the World,” Montelobos honours the region’s rich heritage of rituals and community respect for the land. Iván Saldaña, who has a background in molecular plant biology, is the brand’s founder, alongside agave specialist Don Abel López Mateos, a fifth generation mezcalero. They are committed to sustainable spirit production, and do not use wild agave for any of their products in order to combat deforestation.
This unaged and small batch distilled Joven expression offers a contrast of flavours. Pink pepper, chamomile and candied apple all come to the fore. The body of the mezcal is full and substantial. Meanwhile the acidity provides a refreshing counterpoint, highlighting the smoky and fruity notes.
On the palate, the flavours evolve and deepen. Hints of capers, nutmeg, and pink pepper emerge, adding layers of complexity. Soon enough, tarragon, thyme and fennel develop, alongside a hearty helping of mineral-rich smoke. The finish is long and lingering.
