Tyrrell’s ‘VAT 1’ Semillon is a rich, fruity Australian white wine made in a classic regional style.
Tyrrell’s winery dates back to 1858, when Edward Tyrrell emigrated to Australia from England and took control of 320 acres of land in the Hunter Valley region, planting Semillon and Shiraz. These are now their signature varietals.
Here the Semillon grape produces a wine that is naturally quite low alcohol and will develop many characteristics typical of oak aging. It does so despite never coming into contact with wood at all.
Tyrrell’s ‘VAT 1’ Semillon is one of the most famous expressions of Hunter Valley Semillon. Several years after the vintage, it is starting to show some nutty characteristics, but primary citrus fruit remains on the nose and palate suggesting that this wine is starting to drink at its best and will only become more typical over the years.
