Chatzivaritis Estate Goumenissa Xinomavro is the flagship red blend of the iconic northern Greek wine producer Chatzivaritis.

This P.D.O. (Protected Designation of Origin) Goumenissa red wine is made using two indigenous varieties – 70% Xinomavro and 30% Negoska in the Goumenissa wine region of North Greece. The grapes come from organic vineyards in Macedonia, aimed at a low-interventionist approach to obtain the best quality of grapes while preserving soil fertility.

There is a pre-fermentation cold maceration for 2 days, before alcoholic fermentation at a controlled temperature, with the wine remaining together with its lees for 8 months with periodic re-stirring.

It is matured for at least 12 months in French oak barrels. It then spends 6 months in the bottle before release, adding subtly complex notes.

Enjoy Chatzivaritis Estate Goumenissa Xinomavro with bean stew, charcuterie, game, or grilled meat. It also shines as a partner to hard cheeses.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

This red displays an aroma that is is complex with predominating scent of small red fruits such as blackberry, cherry, supplemented with a hint of spice, tomato, olive and vanilla. It has good acidity and finesse with lovely purity, then a lingering finish. There’s some oak here but it is harmonious.
