Jordan Mellifera is a finely crafted dessert wine produced by the award-winning Jordan Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa. The estate, set in the scenic Cape Winelands, focuses on sustainable viticulture and precision winemaking. The team selects 100% Riesling grapes by hand, picking them early in the morning to preserve freshness.
The name “Mellifera” comes from Latin, meaning “honey-bearing”, and reflects the wine’s rich, sweet character. The winemakers allow the grapes to develop noble rot, also known as Botrytis cinerea, which naturally concentrates their sugars and flavours. This process gives the wine its complex, luxurious style.
The team ferments the wine in old French oak barrels, which add richness while keeping the wine’s brightness intact. Mellifera shows a golden hue in the glass, releasing elegant aromas of honeysuckle, beeswax, and orange blossom. Layers of apricot, citrus peel, and spice follow, promising indulgence with every sip.
On the palate, Mellifera delivers a luscious sweetness balanced by a crisp line of acidity. Flavours of wild honey, ripe peach, and candied orange unfold slowly, leading to a long and refined finish. Despite its richness, the wine stays light on the tongue and never becomes cloying.
The wine pairs beautifully with blue cheeses, fruit tarts, and spiced desserts like baklava or crème brûlée. It also stands alone as a fine dessert in its own right, offering a memorable end to any meal.
The estate matures each vintage before release, ensuring the wine reaches its full potential. Mellifera continues to age gracefully in bottle for over ten years.
