Hanewald-Schwerdt Monkey Morio is a fragrant and slightly sweet German white wine with a light and floral palate.

Founded in 1955, Weingut Hanewald-Schwerdt is a family owned and operated estate in Leistadt.

Today, cousins Thomas Hanewald and Stephan Schwerdt run the estate. They are members of ‘Generation Riesling’, a body made up of the best young winemaking talent in Germany.

The secret of their handcrafted wines is a unique limestone reef which dominates all the sites around Leistadt. The vines are old and surrounded by a protected natural resort in the shade of the Haardt mountains.

The Morio-Muskat grape variety, a Silvaner x Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains cross, is now very rare in Germany, with only 250-300 hectares remaining; these vines are 32+ years old. It has no genetic cross-over with Muscat, despite sharing a similar name and some flavour characteristics.

This wine is called ‘Monkey’ Morio because a stuffed toy monkey that was found near the vines became a mascot for the vineyard.

Pair Hanewald-Schwerdt Monkey Morio with spicy foods like Thai curry.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

Wonderfully perfumed grapey nose with elderflower, apple and hints of pineapple. With a light floral touch and then a tickle of sweetness, this wine is light and very easy drinking on a sunny afternoon.
