Jesús Madrazo Num IV Rioja is a beautifully rich traditional-style Rioja wine made from a blend of red grapes.

Jesús Madrazo Real de Asua comes from one of the founding families of Compania Vinicola del Norte Espana (CVNE). His father, José, co-founded Contino in 1973, establishing the first single estate in Rioja.

In 1995, Jesús, a fifth-generation member of CVNE’s founding family, joined as a winemaker in Haro. By 1999, he had become the Senior Winemaker at Contino Estate, where he gained global recognition and created Spain’s first-ever 100% Graciano wine.

In 2017, Jesús left Contino to seek new challenges and started his own business.

Winemaker’s Description

After a manual harvest, we separated and destemmed the bunches immediately upon their arrival at the winery.

We obtained the Graciano and Garnacha grapes from old family friends in the Rioja Oriental subzone.

We controlled the fermentation for 7 days in small stainless-steel tanks and kept the wine on the skins for a further 10 days of gentle maceration.

The malolactic conversion took place for approximately 15 days in a combination of 2- and 3-year-old oak barrels (70%) and stainless steel.

We continued the subsequent ageing in these barrels (50% French and 50% American) for 15 months before blending and bottling.

Producer’s Tasting Notes

The sweet tannin Jesús Madrazo Num IV Rioja brings to the mix balances, together with the warmth of Garnacha, the rusticity of Graciano.

The powerful nose of red fruits, aromatic bush herbs with mint chocolate and spicy notes (clove/cinnamon) and in the mouth.

It is fresh with intense fruit flavours and very good acidity. The oak is well-balanced and delivers a tight but silky smooth, long finish.

This is my sixth vintage and one that will develop beautifully over the next 5 years.
