Lanzerac Aliquid Novi Pinotage is a spicy, fruity and complex red wine showcasing South Africa’s most distinctive grape.
The name Aliquid Novi (Something New) is based on a quote attributed to Pliny the Elder, a Roman philosopher of the first century AD: “Ex Africa semper aliquid novi” (something new always comes out of Africa).
Steeped in a history dating back to 1692, the Lanzerac Wine Estate, home to the first bottled Pinotage, lies at the foot of the majestic Jonkershoek Valley of Stellenbosch.
Grapes were picked by hand then destemmend, hand sorted and crushed. The wine was fermented with selected commercial yeasts in open bins and punched down four a day by hand. Only second, third and fourth-fill French Oak barrels were used to mature this wine for 16 months before bottling.
Blueberries and cassis tumble into a spicy, fruity mix with a juicy, lightly gamey finish. It’s long, layered and fresh while being incredibly easy to drink. It’s drinking delightfully now, but will also reward careful cellaring until 2030.
Lanzerac’s Aliquid Novi Pinotage showcases the full potential of South Africa’s signature grape. It demonstrates finesse, age-worthiness and a sense of place.
This wine is best enjoyed with flavoursome meaty dishes like crispy duck pancakes, a pork-based pasta, venison or robust vegetarian dishes. It loves umami, much like a good Pinot Noir! Decanting before serving allows its character to shine fully.
