Plymouth Navy Strength is gin bottled at the higher alcohol navy strength (57% a.b.v.). It is made with juniper, coriander seed, orange peels, green cardamom, angelica and orris root.

Both a style and type of gin, Plymouth Gin was the only gin in the UK to have Protected Geographical Indication within the EU. This lasted until 2017 when Pernod Ricard, the brand owners, sadly chose not to renew the PGI. Their reason was that that Plymouth Gin is such an iconic brand in its own right that there should be no need to protect the name and style.

Thankfully, some things never change! The gin is still made in the Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth to an original recipe from 1793. It is crafted using traditional methods and seven botanicals, blended with crystal clear Dartmoor water.

The term “navy strength” refers to how much alcohol a spirit contains – typically a higher amount than usual. In the navy of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, ships relied on gunpowder for their defences. If gunpowder got wet it became unusable, spelling disaster for the ship. Due to the length of their voyages, ships carried large amounts of provisions, including spirits. If these spilled on gunpowder it could dampen it. Beyond a strength of 57% ABV, spirits are flammable, so even if it spilled, gunpowder would remain intact. A test for “navy strength” was to pour a spirit on gunpowder and check that it would still light, thus keeping the ship armed but the crew happy!
