Matawhero Single Vineyard Pinot Gris is an exceptional wine from Matawhero Vineyard, located in the Gisborne region of New Zealand.

Gisborne boasts long hot summers and rich fertile plains that meander towards secluded surf beaches.

Fertile soils enable the area to produce an abundance of crops, however the focus is on growing grapes. This New Zealand winery is one of the oldest, with its first vintage produced in 1975.

The vineyards rely entirely on natural rainfall for irrigation, using 100% natural dry farming methods.

The benefits of dry farming include the conservation of precious resources like water, which also contributes to the wine’s distinctive style, characterised by superior fruit flavours and a lovely weight and texture.

The grapes for this wine are cultivated at the Briant vineyard. The silt deposits over a clay base create ideal growing conditions for Pinot Gris. This wine is made from the new ENTAV-INRA clone 457, which produces small bunches and berries, enhancing the wine’s flavour. The limited crop yield allows the vines to ripen the fruit more easily.

Tasting Notes

Appearance: A pale straw-yellow colour with a slight golden hue. The wine is clear and bright, indicating its good health and clarity.

Aroma: Fragrant and inviting, offering a bouquet of aromas that includes ripe pear, apple, and stone fruit notes like peach and apricot. There are also hints of floral undertones, reminiscent of jasmine and honeysuckle, along with a subtle spice element that adds complexity. A touch of minerality, characteristic of the region’s soils, enhances the aromatic profile.

Palate: Medium-bodied, with refreshing acidity that balances its rich fruit flavours. The primary fruit notes from the nose follow through on the palate, with luscious pear and peach dominating, complemented by citrus elements such as lemon zest and a hint of tropical fruit, like pineapple. The wine has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel, thanks to a portion of it being fermented in oak, which adds texture and complexity.

Finish: Long and satisfying, with lingering flavours of ripe fruit and a touch of minerality. The wine’s acidity provides a crispness that invites another sip, making it a versatile choice for food pairing or enjoyable on its own.

Food Pairing

Matawhero Pinot Gris 2022 pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. Its bright acidity and fruit-forward profile complement seafood, particularly grilled fish or prawns. It also works well with chicken dishes, especially those featuring creamy sauces. Additionally, it can be enjoyed alongside Asian cuisine, such as sushi or Thai dishes, where its aromatic qualities enhance the flavours.

Overall Impression
